The coffee shop across from my office sells all kinds of merchandise—t-shirts, wine, art, and a degree in a box.
What? Yep, you can earn your business, law or medical degree by purchasing a fifteen-dollar tin and reading up on all its contents. Obviously kidding… but truly, this is one of the neat knick-knacks in the Okafes coffee shop.
While waiting on our lattes one morning, my boyfriend remarked, “I bet there really is a lot you can learn in those little boxes.” Right away I realized how right he is. I haven’t yet bought one or really read the back to see what’s in there, but I’ll bet it presents all the information on law, business or medicine that lends you a “working knowledge” of the subject. My boyfriend proceeded to say, “you would be able to carry a conversation so much better with those professionals if you acquired even just the bare necessities.” So true.
This got me thinking… if only there was a box on everything in life to make us smarter and better rounded. Not just subjects, but life lessons, and the “how to’s” you encounter daily. I mean, I will never be a lawyer, nor have the desire to practice law, but I would love to graze the very surface of the subject and at least obtain an understanding. Then again, that’s a heck of a lot of boxes and there isn’t that much merchandise space in Okafes.
I think I also felt this an important blog post, because it hasn’t really hit me that my schooling education is complete. Sure, we are always learning, but there is no more signing up for classes, all on my parent’s dime. It almost makes me wonder, “Did I get all I should have out of that class? Should I have taken that course? Should I go back to school?” And then I shake my head and I’m quickly reminded that I don’t miss those long nights studying, Sunday group meetings and semester-long projects.
Yeah, I think I’d rather go buy a fifteen-dollar tin at the coffee shop.
